How Medical Expenses Are Handled
Child support does not include the costs of:
- Uninsured medical expenses
- Daycare
- Medical insurance
Support orders direct which parent is responsible for these expenses and the manner in which they should be paid.
The costs mentioned above are not included as part of the child support calculation, but they will increase the amount the custodial parent or either parent will receive. For instance, if the children are on your medical insurance and are deductible on your tax returns, you will receive more child support and be able to apply less actual payment toward expenditures of the children.
The payment method and division of these expenses are determined. However, since the costs of these items can be significant, these orders can sometimes be modified or changed, calling for a future increase or decrease in support by the agreement or application of the parties.
